I Wrote A Second Book! Introducing, Love Letters I Can't Send
A witty, rom-com. Just in time for Valentines Day.
Hello, friends!
It’s been, well, likely close to a year since I dusted off the ‘ol Substack. Fun announcement: my debut fiction book, Love Letters I Can’t Send, is here!
Meet Jade Harlowe…
A NYC ad agency copywriter by day and rose jam maker by night, who finds herself breaking off an engagement with “a certified finance bro” for a six-month break. As she navigates the challenges of moving back to her childhood home, her hippie dad mentions a beach shack left to the family after her Great Aunt’s passing. He offers half the profit if they can “channel their inner Chip and Joanna Gains” to DIY the renos, and flip it ASAP.
Upon arrival, the Harlowes need cash fast. Jade hastily posts the three rooms on Airbnb (exaggerating the marketing) to finance renovations with “coming soon” photos. Three men check in for the summer.
Cyrus Amir is a Muji-pen-loving software developer at Hinge in NYC who is "enthusiastic about frog memes,” Kavvy Cohen is about to sell “wiccidd.io” the software company he started in highschool for "wickedly good invoice software,” and Sanjay Singhal is an ER doctor who reminds Jade of the Jersey Shore line: “Gym Tan Laundry,” because he only cares about triathlon training.
Except, the boys hate each other. But, all care about Jade. Unexpectedly, three romances blossom all under the same (leaky) roof with her.
When Jade gets pissed with her guests, she bites her tongue (because she needs 5 star reviews) and channels anger into love letters… that are actually more like hate letters where she vents on old, yellow legal pads. These get stashed in her “bunkie,” the converted shed she’s been sleeping in. (Her dad? He’s in the tent in the yard to yield extra profit).
Things get messy when Jade gets fired from the agency, the old house turns into a plumbing nightmare, Jade’s two friends fly in, and one has eyes for her favorite guest. The boys unearth the angry letters, and, of course, when summer is up, her ex-fiancé is awaiting an answer.
Set against the backdrop of sunny Savary Island, a banana-shaped island off the coast of Canada, LOVE LETTERS I CAN’T SEND explores themes of listening to your intuition, self-discovery, coming into the “adulting” age of 30, what it means to be a modern woman amidst the patriarchy, and the age old Friends sitcom question: “Does it count as cheating if you’re on a break?”
